Protocol 7
The protocol that fully links the Wired and Real World together. Devised by Eiri Masami while he was a Tachibana Lab employee. Against the wishes of Tachibana Lab, Eiri Masami designed Protocol 7 to utilize Schumann Resonance to connect everybody to the Wired (and therefore each other) without devices.

Interpretation:
As the series progresses, Protocol 7 seems to become more and more pervasive in the world of serial experiments lain as evidenced by the progressive "blurring" of Real World and the Wired, which appears to be correlated with Lain's increasing power and awareness.

Protocol 7 makes the collective unconscious (as described by Jung) become the collective consciousness. As such, it may also be in reference to the Leary/Wilson 7th Circuit of the nervous-system/consciousness, aka the Collective Neurogenetic Circuit. On that note, it is interesting that Tachibana Lab also "succeeded in analyzing the molecular structure of the genome of human"--(quoted from Shindo's translated scrïpt, layer:11 "INFORNOGRAPHY"). That Tachibana Lab was able to do this may have provided the means for Eiri Masami to create Protocol 7. Leary and Wilson describe Circuit 7 as the DNA memory/genetic archives whose total collective information (beyond the individual, gene-pool, and species levels) is the consciousness of Gaia, the living global brain. So the evolution of the 7th circuit is the evolution of Gaia. Those who develop 7th circuit consciousness gain awareness of the DNA memory/genetic archive and of Gaia.

A proccessor called "Psyche" has been talked about for quite a while now. At first, the name spread within News Groups, then to the Web, and among enthusiasts like clerks who work for shops in Akihabara or Nipponbashi. There were people who doubted its ability to upgrade the capacity of a machine just by connecting it to the mother board. The editorial section succeded in obtaining a processor which is believed to be "Psyche" through a certain route, and here is a detailled report of it. However, we cannot tell you how we obtained it, and questions about the proccessor cannot be answered.

As you can see from its appearance, it has a multiple layer structure. It seems that the accumulation ability per die area is not exceptionally high since it is a small rot prototype. We got the body but have no documents about the device. Therefore, it was installed by trial and error.

As it was rumored, you place the proccessor on 429pin North Bridge, the chip set of the mother board. It was not so difficult to set the device since it was like setting an Over Drive accelerator to the old 386 model. However, we had a hard time making it start. The proccessor brings 133mhz base clock to 400mhz and interrupts the memory controller with the transmitting rate of 1.6GB/sec. To our surprise, Psyche seems to control the whole mother board and even I/O with its own command by intercepting BIOS. Therefore, the jumper settings will be made invalid. Indeed, it is possible to upgrade the crock by this method, and also the signals and I/O for special purposes can be upgraded drastically. However, it is the result that is important. In the ordinary bench mark test, it was excellent in all aspects like CPU, FPU, and ray tracing but this was not so surprising. It seems that Psyche shows its real ability when connected to a network. During the various tests it proved unbelievably efficient in broadcasting on the network. Psyche employs 126bit memory which is equivalent to L2 cash and it seems that the command packet of a network is translated by an interpreter method and responds back with a protocol method. Due to this, the amount of data in the packet and the time needed for transmission was improved significantly. Adding to this, the protocol used here involves the code of network protocol which is called next generation TCP/IP, and what was "not visible" has become visible by this. When we accessed to a network with a machine with Psyche, things that we did not intend to download were downloaded automatically and the registry was rewritten. At the same time, an application like an e-mailer was installed and a strange message was shown in the floating window. This message was an oracle and it commanded me. The prophesy must be carried out. "Eastern Mathematical Knights" will save my soul and the software that put me back to where I should be shall stop the secretion of serotonin in my brain and take me to the world where there is no agony and grief..

I belive this is just another peice to the puzzle THAT IS LAIN or How Lain came to be. But there is no answer to the question..... "what is existence?" other than the answer "existence is existence... it simply exist." ..... You can call it a metephore or whatever you wish... Lain is Lain ... she simply exist. ...."now i'm confused again... am I over here or over there.... but then again here is connected to there ... so.... " .................................

WHO IS LAIN?

Possibly a product of Protocol 7, or rather, "Awakened" by the effects of Protocol 7. Her origins are unclear, but she seems to represent the female side to balance/oppose the male. She is the Goddess (Eris?) or Her manifestation who will put the false God in his place, but it takes time for her to find out and accept who she is (and discover her powers). She also represents the Jesus figure (or Joan of Arc, perhaps?), in that she sacrifices her Real World existence for everyone else. Since Protocol 7 utilizes Earth's natural resonance, perhaps Lain represents the Global-Brain/Gaia, the pagan Goddess that is Earth itself (the biosphere, and the collective unconscious) who is/was omnipresent but was "awakened" and given a new form (teenage girl) when Eiri (the magus turned false God) used Protocol 7 to connect the Wired to the collective (un)conscious (and therefore) to Real World. Upon his ascension to "Godhood" (circuit 7 consciousness?), perhaps Eiri discovered the newly-awakened Lain/Gaia and arranged the fake family in order to control her before she got too powerful, pretending to be her equal and to have created her, but Lain eventually discovers that Eiri is only a false God. This would explain why Lain has no apparent memory of her past with her "family" (such a past doesn't exist). On at least one level, then, serial experiments lain might be described as the story of the Goddess discovering who she is (hence, the multiple-personality Lain motif)


It's just another thought... interpretation of Lain.

WHO IS LAIN?

In the beginning we are introduced to lain and she has a sort of amnesia--She doesnt know who she is or where she came from. She is in a controlled environment without much access to the internet or computers in general. She has a 'kiddie' computer but its not powerful. We have to figure out Lains history and we find this out closer to the end of the series. In the beginning of the series, Lain is just starting to become aware of her true purpose. The world she sees around her is not quite right and she knows it deep down. As she becomes more aware of the power of the internet and her special abilities she becomes more in touch with her true self.
What if Lain was the only child to return from the experiment alive. Somehow a child altered from the experiment. OR simpy a byproduct that appeared as a result. Maybe Lain existed before the K.I.D.S program but didnt exist as one child until after the accident.
Havent you ever heard of ghosts? This series suggests that people and spirits wander the empty places between the wired and the real world. It may have to do with the "K.I.D.S." project.
So, we can tell that Lains parents were in on something that MIKA wasnt. Mika acted like a normal teenager. She thought Lain was her sister plain and simple. *Even when Lain was not present*, thats how you know that Mika believed she and her parents were who they said they were. The Iwakura family. Lains parents acted differently in private. There are 2 choices. Either Lains parents were "Actors" or "clones" (synthetic copies) of *real* parents that Lain and Mika share.
Perhaps the physical girl was part of that family before the KIDS experiment. The Lain you know may have taken her place.

There is the world around us, a world of people, tactile sensation, and culture. There is the wired world, inside the computer, of images, personalities, virtual experiences, and a culture all of its own. Lain, a thirteen year-old girl, discovered how closely the two worlds are linked and how to connect them. Lain dose not know who she is or why she is whatever she is. Nor dose she know that she exists everywhere in all things at all times and in both worlds. Maybe she only exists because because people believe that she exists and if no one knows she exists she would no longer exists? Dose that sound right? Maybe Lain consists of memories and can see all memory and can feel what these memories would make a human person feel. Dose that make her human? Is the world we are living in real at all? Where do our memories go when we die? There are many ideas and things that should be considerd possibilitys. I am open to them all as possibilitys. The truth is that no one can know the truth, not even Lain. A seemingly omnipresent being that can move through time and see everything and everyone including their inner most thoughts and feelings because we are all connected to the some thing called the collective unconsious. If there is one thing i've learned for certain from Lain it is that questions are more important than answers and we shouldn't feel like we are missing somthing if we cannot find the answers to our questions. Some things are ment to be unknown and some questions are ment to be just questions. If all the answers were there in writting somewhere... there would be no more questions and then... what would we have left to learn about?  <- another question.
